National Beer Can Appreciation Day marks the anniversary of the first commercial beer can, which debuted in 1935. After nearly two years of testing and development, the American Can Company partnered with the Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company to introduce canned beer to the public, marking a major shift in how beer was packaged and enjoyed.
At the time, beer was almost exclusively sold in glass bottles. While bottles worked, they were heavy, fragile, and inconvenient to transport. The beer can offered a practical alternative, making beer easier to carry, store, and enjoy beyond the bar or brewery.
Early beer cans were made from steel and required a separate opener, often called a church key. Even with that extra step, drinkers quickly embraced cans for their durability and convenience. Over time, beer can technology continued to evolve with protective interior linings, pull tabs, lighter aluminum construction, and improved recyclability.
These advancements helped cans become the preferred choice for many breweries, especially within the craft beer world where freshness and portability matter.
